Sicilian Miniature Donkey

Status: Domesticated.Range: Originally domesticated in the Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia but now found in a variety of locations.Habitat: Open plains and plateaus.Food: Hay, oats, grain, grass.Reproduction: A single baby, called a foal, is born after a 12 month gestation period. Foals are up and nursing within 30 minutes and are weaned after 5-6 months.Facts: Miniature donkeys can be used to protect sheep from wild dogs and are often used in rehabilitation work with mentally challenged or disabled children. Males are called “jacks” and females are called “jennets.”
