Status: Vulnerable.Range: Central and South America.Habitat: Tropical forests.Food: Fruits, leaves, flowers, nuts, seeds, insects, eggs.Reproduction: Females mature around four years of age while males mature at five. After a 7 month gestation period, one offspring is born. Newborns will cling to their mother’s abdomen for about four months and then spend several more months clinging to their mother’s back. The young will then venture away on their own soon afterward.Facts: Spider monkeys have a slender body with long arms, a long prehensile tail, and a prominent abdomen. With the thumb on their hands absent and a prehensile tail, they can swing more easily from limb to limb. The tail is so much like a hand, it even has ridges that resemble fingerprints.
